iPadA recent article from Legal Blog Watch discusses whether the iPad is an appropriate tool for the legal profession. The consensus in the article is that it is not.   I strongly disagree!  Maybe my fingers are smaller, but I have gotten really fast at typing on my iPad 2.  I also have a wireless keyboard that works with it if I need to do some really fast typing.  I love how quickly I can get through my emails and time entry while I am away from the office.  These two things are the main sources of "busy work" that keep me from being more productive while in the office.  With my iPad, I can get 90 percent of this done before I get to work in the morning each day or at night before I go to sleep.  I also love the small size, it sure beats the clunky laptop.  Finally, even if I only have a few minutes to get a little work done, I can pull out the iPad, whip it open and get work done.  With a laptop, you have to be committed enough to start it up and shut it down each time you want to use it.  I have been amazed how 5 mins here and there add up over the course of a week.  I am much more likely to pull out my iPad for a few mins of work than I am a laptop.  All in all, it has dramatically increased my away from work productivity and it is much easier to type on than a handheld.

i use my iPad constantly. It is a functional tool that I have become dependent upon for many different tasks. One particular App that I highly recommend is iTap. ITap was recommended to me by my law firm's IT consultant. It enables me to log in remotely to my PC at my office, and to control it fully with the iPad. With iTap, there is nothing I can do while sitting at my desk at the office that I cannot do remotely with the iPad.  I use a blue tooth Apple keyboard when I need to do extensive word processing, although I don't absolutely need to. IPad is, for me, the most useful piece of hardware that I have ever used. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate the iPad as a 15!

I second Dave's comment.  I took the iPad to a weeklong trip two weeks ago, and left behind the laptop.  The Apple keyboard worked extremely well, as I was able to write lengthy reports and letters.  iTap indeed is great; the remote session on the iPad is easy to work on due to screen's real estate.  I also use QuickOffice to work on my Office documents, but I am still searching for a more powerful word processor that works with .doc files (one that allows formatting of paragraphs such as justifications, spacing, etc., which QuickOffice does not have).  I also strongly recommend GoodReader; if your office documents are on a WebDav fileserver, GoodReader can be configured to access the fileserver and download documents as desired.
